Midway Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Midway, Kentucky, has received national recognition for their work in food sustainability. Since environmental stewardship is an important part of the church’s mission, the congregation decided to focus on food-related issues because food processing and distribution has one of most damaging effects of all human-made systems on the planet.
With the help of a member of the congregation, who is a professional chef, the church has hosted locally-sourced dinners and breakfasts for church and community events, uses leftovers from the chef’s restaurant to cut down on food waste, composts all food scraps, and gleans from local orchards to donate the food to Glean Kentucky.
The congregation entered this project into the Interfaith Power & Light Cool Congregations Challenge, which rewards faith communities who have made significant steps towards sustainability with recognition and $1000.
To enter your congregation in the challenge go to http://www.coolcongregations.org/enter-challenge/. The deadline for entering is December 16, 2016.
