Thomas Jefferson Unitarian Church has been formally recognized as a Green Sanctuary Congregation

Louisville, KY (May 2011) - Thomas Jefferson Universalist Unitarian Church Signs the KIPL Congregational Covenant

At their Spring 2011 Congregational Meeting Thomas Jefferson Universalist Unitarian Church became the latest Kentucky house of worship to sign the KIPL Congregational Covenant The Covenant states that "We agree to partner with Kentucky Interfaith Power and Light in protecting God's creation. We have already done or agree to do at least one of the following:

1. Engage in an ongoing process of education with our members concerning environmental stewardship, energy production and usage in relation to global warming.

2. Conduct an energy audit of our buildings to identify sources of energy waste and the potential financial savings of energy related improvements.

3. Make energy efficiency improvements to our community's buildings.

4. Utilize renewable energy by purchasing green power, installing solar panels, or contributing to the .

5. Analyze, reduce and offset our greenhouse gas emissions with the goal of becoming a non-polluting Congregation.

6. Support public policies that contribute to these goals.

7. Make an annual financial contribution to Kentucky Interfaith Power and Light. KIPL is pleased to welcome Thomas Jefferson Universalist Unitarian Church into this covenant."

Thomas Jefferson Unitarian Church is aiming for Green Sanctuary Status

The community at Thomas Jefferson Unitarian has been working for some time towards being recognized as a Green Sanctuary. Here are some of the latest things they are doing:

Working with Kentuckians for the Commonwealth on the "I Love Mountains" campaign.

Working with Eastern Area Community Ministries to distribute compact flourescent light bulbs and their "Bright Idea" brochure to low-income households.

Holding a Sacred Celebration with Cultivating Connections.

Removing invasive plants from their campus

Restarting their Community Supported Agriculture program.

Holding another film festival of environmental films.
