UNC Women's Group Raises Money by Recycling

Lucille Lykins, the chairwoman of the Ada B. Circle at South Ashland United Methodist Church, recently was recognized by the Kentucky Conference of the United Methodist Church for her 50 continuous years of service to the United Methodist Women in Kentucky.

Lykins launched a recycling program for the mission. For a number of years, members of South Ashland United Methodist would bring their old newspapers to the church, and Lykins - who was then still driving and had not broken her hip - would personally load them into her car and take them to the Rumpke Recycling Center on U.S. 23.

"I'm not sure exactly how much money we raised, but I know that one year, $2,000 was raised just from the newspapers we recycled," Lykins said. "Of course, I didn't do this on my own. I had a lot of help. People saved their newspapers and brought them to church, and sometimes I received some help from other church members in transporting the newspapers to Rumpke. We found a way of making a little money from what we were throwing in the trash."

"I don't think even Lucille knows how much her recycling program helped us here at the mission," said Downing. "It never raised a lot of money, but every little bit helps and this definitely helped pay our bills and fund our programs."

The program was discontinued when Rumpke moved its recycling center from Ashland to Hanging Rock, but Lykins said she still occasionally takes recyclables to Hanging Rock.

"They (Rumpke) have a nice facility over there that is easy to get in and out of," Lykins said. "And it's not that far away."
