Crossroads Christian Church, Lexington

An Little History of the Crossroads Christian Church Community Garden and Agape Market provided by Tresine T. Logsdon

On the heels of a visit from Matthew Sleeth to Crossroads Christian Church in March 2009, a Creation Care group was born.  At first, the group met bimonthly to discuss green actions that could be accomplished at home and in the community.  Recycling was stepped up, a tour of the local recycling facility was scheduled and a dialogue was started about energy conservation in the facility and reducing the use of styrofoam for the coffee stands.  In March 2011, the Creation Care group partnered with the College Ministry to design and build 10 8 x10 ft cedar raised beds for our Blessed Earth Community Garden and by Mary 2011, all beds were adopted by a wide variety of members from a single garden enthusiast to small groups made up of 22 or more adults.  Children are always invited to participate in Crossroads' Blessed Earth Community Garden by helping with soil ammendments, planting, weeding, watering, harvesting or decorating boxes.

In June 2011, Caleb Mathis, member of Blessed Earth Community Garden and Xroads Student Ministry Creative Arts Director, organized and piloted a weekly free Agape Farmers Market in two areas of town identified as food desserts.  Each Wednesday and Saturday, Caleb and other Blessed Earth Community Garden members deliver produce harvested from the Community Garden or donated from neighbors to the Farmers Market locations to BE the church and feed our neighbors minds, spirits and bodies by teaching about and giving away healthy, sustainably grown, produce.

The Blessed Earth Community Garden group at Crossroads hosted an educational outreach event in July 2011 by inviting John Walker of Faith Feeds to visit.  Xroads Blessed Earth Community Garden hopes to partner with Faith Feeds and other local gleaning organizations in the future.
