Episcopal Church of the Advent
Creation Care One Step at a Time
The community at Church of the Advent is taking it's first steps at caring for God's creation. They have started a recycling program by obtaining some recycle bins to collect items. They have started replacing their incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent ones. They have started an organic garden on site to grow flowers with liturgical meaning just outside the church. On Earth Day Sunday, they had special liturgies and invited Kentucky IPL to preach. (Click here for a copy of the sermon.)
Senior Warden Douglas Pfendler said, "I want to focus my energies this year on making the parish more efficient."
Amanda Gissendaner helps run the annual rummage sale in December that is, of course, a good way to encourage reusing.
Some the things they are planning for 2010 include an energy audit, putting their outside lights on a timer, getting rid of styrofoam cups, using eco-friendly cleaning products, collecting compost to be taken off site and having a computer recycling event in the Fall.
