About Greening West Louisville

The Greening West Louisville (GWL) Program was started in 2010 to assist houses of worship in West Louisville to better care for God's creation through conservation and efficiency. Recognizing that in addition to the environmental costs, energy expenses are large burdens to faith communities. As such, we work to reduce energy use and help congregations put more of their resources towards their missions

GWL has assisted more than a dozen congregations in identifying and reducing their energy costs as well as winning grants for the necessary improvements. By performing an energy audit, our BPI and LEED certified staff identify where financial relief can be found by eliminating unnecessary energy use. At the same time we work to deepen our commitment to creation care.

"I saw the land as bigger than just the ground; I saw the land as being all of us, as one. If God can create a climate where animals and plants and human beings work together, we have a responsibility to try to maintain that balance. That’s when the “conversion” really hit me."

“In the same way that we fought for the right to vote in ’64 and ’65, now we’ve got to stand up for clean energy, clean air, and clean water”
International Civil Rights Walk of Fame inductee
Rev. Gerald Durley

Kentucky Interfaith Power and Light’s Greening West Louisville program
is hosting an important event this October at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage exploring the connections between race, faith and climate change. Our theme is "Race, Faith and Climate Change: How Global Warming is a Civil Rights Issue". The date is Thursday, October 25th at 6:30 pm. Click here for reservations.

Our program will join the NAACP’s Climate Justice Initiative in acknowledging that global warming is “one of the most important civil rights issues of our time” and affirm the call to “right the injustices that are visited upon us through the water we drink, the land on which we live, and the very air we breathe” (injustices that are being disproportionately borne by the African-American community).

Our featured speaker is the award-winning educator Rev. Gerald Durley (Senior Pastor, Providence Missionary Baptist Church of Atlanta, GA). Rev Durley works closely with the national Interfaith Power and Light movement and has been engaged in the issues of our times for more than 50 years.

Join us as he shares his story. Learn about his unique journey from civil rights activist to becoming a prominent voice on behalf of creating a faith-based response to the climate crisis.

Hear about his “conversion” experience and how he came to believe that “ . . . in the same way that we fought for the right to vote in ’64 and ’65, now we’ve got to stand up for clean energy, clean air, and clean water”.
