Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Hosts Eco-Fair

SUBMITTED BY MELODY SMITH - SEPTEMBER 22, 2008 - Courier-Journal.com

National Staff Association of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Hosts Eco-Fair Louisville, KY - "It's easy being green" was the theme of the September 18th event at The Presbyterian Center, home of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), 100 Witherspoon Street. The National Staff Association coordinated the event to educate staff and increase their awareness of the many products and services available to encourage ecological thinking at home and at work.

A host of exhibitors and local businesses offered staff resources, products and real solutions about living better, healthier lives with less environmental impact. Product demonstrations, giveaways and door prizes along with battery recycling and a book swap rounded out the event.

One of the exhibitors was Tim Darst of Kentucky Interfaith Power and Light . "We're here to help people make the connection between ecology and religion", states Darst. "This is a good opportunity to help individuals become more aware of what is going on in our environment and their impact." Darst speaks to organizations and congregations across the area of any faith about how they can make a difference in their own homes and lives. For more information about Kentucky Interfaith Power and Light, visit www.kentuckyipl.org.

The event was promoted internally with additional door prize chances given for every battery, light bulb, reusable grocery bag brought to be recycled, and every book donated to the book swap. "This was a fun and exciting event to bring together for our staff?, states Vennie Constant, co-coordinator of the Eco-Fair. "A very timely one as well. Learning how to be more ecologically-minded is more important now than ever."

Participating exhibitors and businesses included Bike Courier-Bike Shop, Bluegrass Green, Coalition/Advancement of Regional Transportation (CART), Commonwealth Recycling, Earth & Spirit Center, Earthenirvana, Equal Exchange/Sweat Free Program, Kentucky Interfaith Power/Light, LG&E Energy Audits, Louisville Nature Center, Louisville Water Company, Master Gardener Program, Rainbow Blossom, and Transit Authority of River City (TARC). The National Staff Association of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) works to find ways to increase caring, enhance community and build membership morale through social, educational, recreational, and spiritual events; and to provide opportunities for the staff of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to be visible and active in the community, both internally and externally.
